Novice Searching Advise
To determine how many external links you have pointing to your web page (works for Yahoo and MSN only). . .
link:http://www.domain.com -site:http://www.domain.com (for Google type link:http://www.domain.com)
To find an exact match use "Quotation Marks" . . .
"Bill Gates" Microsoft blog
-word means the results cannot contain this word, conversely,
+word means the results must include this word though this operator is assumed by default.
To search for a specific filetype try . . .
filetype:PDF (Yahoo uses something different but we've fixed that here. This would be beneficial
if you were looking for a mailing list of doctors. A search like . . . +M.D. "New York, NY" filetype:XLS . . .
might yeild some excellent results in only a moment of searching. This is not a perfect science but it works.
Use "OR" when either word could work in the search . . .
"Michael Jordan" Tarheels OR Bulls
To see how many pages of your site has been indexed from the search engines . . . site:domain.com
If you are doing research and can only cite web sites from an .edu domain use . . . thesis phrase site:edu
Checking out the competition
Most people who are shooting to rank for a search term will put all keywords in the title of the desired page. . .
intitle:keywords in any order || intitle:"ordered keyword phrase"
Similarly, people will lease out a domain name with the search term inside. To find these people. . .
inurl:keywords
Here is something useful. . .
"my keyword phrase" -site:mysite.com
After running that query, export your results to a CSV and open in excel to see
the most prominent links going to your competitors. This spreadseet will have SERPs listed
for 3 major engines.
